PREFACE
In the Name of Allah The Most Compassionate, The Most Merciful. All praise to be to Allah, Lord of the Universe, and may peace and prayers be upon His Final Prophet. Show us the straight path in carrying our duty as Caliphs on Earth.
INTRODUCTION
In order to produce a good Muslim medical practitioner, it is essential to integrate the intellectual superiority with the Islamic principles based on Al-Quran and Sunnah. With regard to that, Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia (IMAM) - Student Chapter (SC) IIUM has been organizing an annual symposium named “Triple I-Medicine Symposium (Islamic Intellectual Integration)”. The symposium was held initially around the theme of Maqasid Shariah namely the 5 essential interests; Faith, Life, Lineage, Intellect and Property. With this in mind, for the past 5 years (since 2004), IMAM SC of IIUM has held Triple-I Medicine Symposiums each carrying one of the five themes of Maqasid Shariah.
The first of its kind was held on the year 2004 with the theme “Da’wah Fardiyyah in Medical Practice”. The second was held in 2005, with the theme “Securing the Lineage” in which the importance of reproductive or women health awareness in securing the wellbeing of the up coming generation was highlighted. The most recent was held in 2007 with the theme “Securing the ‘Aql”. In each symposium, one aspect of Maqasid Shariah was selected and discussed in details especially relevant to the medical community.

As a continuation of the previous symposiums, this year another component of the Maqasid Shariah,
which is the property, the only one left to be discussed, will be brought to light. To mark the end of the Maqasid Shariah as covered by the Triple-I
Symposium, this final installation will first conclude with the last principle then briefly recap all the previous sessions. “Triple-I Medicine Symposium: Maqasid Shari’ah; Revisited & Completed” has been chosen as the comprehensive theme for 2009 symposium to serve as a finale symposium completing the theme of understanding and living the principles of Maqasid Shariah started 5 years ago.
The wealth of any community depends on the productive activities of its healthy citizens. Medicine contributes to wealth generation by prevention of disease, promotion of health, and treatment of any diseases and their sequelae. Communities with general poor health are less productive than healthy vibrant communities. The principles of protection of life and protection of wealth may conflict in cases of terminal illness. Care for the terminally ill consumes a lot of resources that could have been used to treat other persons with treatable conditions.
In the modern period nowadays, medical technology is creating so many issues whose resolution will require a broad bird’s eye-view approach that can only be found in the theory of maqasid shariah (Kasule, O. H. (2009, March 29).
